THE CITY WALLS

THE WALLS AT THE KARS GATE

Structure: Marr-Orbeli gate II; towers 12 and 14.
Other designations:

The towers on either side of the Kars gate are the largest and highest surviving towers in the walls - the rooms within them are particularly complex and this fortified gate is almost a castle in itself.

An arch spanned between the towers and over the entrance way, allowing defenders to fire directly down at an enemy trying to break open the doors.

Beyond the Kars Gate is a stretch of powerful and very impressive walls. The ramparts at this point begin to turn southward along the plateau, and the defenders must have considered Ani to be particularly vunerable to attack at this location.

The outer wall here is almost as strong as the inner one, and has a massive tower lavishly decorated with polychrome stonework. These decorative additions, and others (like a prominent cross sculpted in contrasting black stone) suggest that the walls were designed almost as much for effect as for defense.

Beyond this section, the wall is very fragmentary until it reaches the ruins of a palace (whose walls formed part of the city wall).

Even less remains of the wall beyond this palace, but enough does to indicate that it probably linked up with the citadel wall.
